Myth #1: Authors Just Write

Would that this were so. How did I spend several hours of my afternoon today? I needed to find the answer to how to transfer images from my phone to my computer. Now, for those of you techies, stop rolling your eyes! Not everyone—and I definitely include me!—was born with a cell phone and a computer in their crib.

Google the answer? Yes, I did. Did I understand the instructions? No. My first hurdle was to locate the ‘start’ button I’m supposed to push.

So here’s some hilarious-about-me background. Decades ago—at least three—my late husband asked me to be a tester for an Idiot’s Guide book. Sure, I’m game, said I. Perfect candidate am I. No tech experience. Zero. I can type, on a typewriter—remember those?—and a computer. That’s it.

I’m sent the book. The first instruction is to “boot up the computer.” What does ‘boot up’ mean? I search the glossary. Nope. Seems that ‘everyone’ knows what that means so it’s not listed.

Being a rather intelligent person and attorney at that time I decide it does not mean to kick the computer. As in ‘boot it to the moon’ which is what I was wishing to do to relieve my frustration at being stymied so early in this Idiot’s Guide. (I do not then nor today consider myself an idiot.)

Solution? A non-tech one. Husband comes home and I ask, so, ‘what does boot up mean?’

Fast forward to today. At least once on many days I say, ‘please just let me write.’

I need a genie to magically show me how to use Canva or post to Instagram and create reels and all that other techie social media stuff that authors are expected to do in addition to fashioning an order of words and sentences and paragraphs that entertain and or inform and or offer heartwarming inspiring messages for young and old.

And yet, I admit that I need to learn more and take on tech, even in a rudimentary way. Why? Because I am passionate about my subject matter—in my nonfiction and in my children’s books—and I firmly believe that there is an audience that will benefit from reading ‘my’ words. (Indeed, I am told so and read so in my emails and in posted reviews.)

I hope readers, of whatever age or circumstance, will be inspired and supported in creating a fulfilled life from first breath to last, as well as a kinder, gentler world for all of us. Or as scripture would say, of creating heaven on earth.

Before I post, as I am able. I welcome receiving positive techie vibes to help me on my learning journey. Thanks in advance.

Until this year, I did not own a smart phone. I depend on YouTube videos to find out how I use it. I'm at the elementary stage still, like "how do I get it to ring?" I can relate to your level of frustration.
